After a recent weekend on the streams with a friend where the fishing was tough but rewarding; We got to discussing good fishing sunglasses and if they really make a difference.
I have been through many pairs of fishing glasses in my time; some good and some not so good.
before you even get to the quality side of things you have to have a pair that fits your face so as not to let light in from underneath because reflected light off the water will give you a massive headache and do damage to your eyes.
You want a pair that are not too heavy or too tight or you will either loose them in the drink when you lean forward to land that fish or end up with a headache because of the pressure behind your ears.
Now that you have a pair that fit right; You had better make sure they have the right lenses for the fishing that you are doing.
There is a big difference between saltwater, lake or Stream fishing.
Each has its special requirements and should be thought of when purchasing your fishing Sunglasses.
Why Polaroid?
Polaroids allow you to see into the water by reflecting certain light.(That is the un-technical explanation)and allows you to see stream structure and even fish.
The quality of the lenses determines how well you can see into the water.
I am using Tonics at present and have been for a couple of seasons now. They are an Australian company and produce a high standard Polaroid Sunglasses from frame to lenses.
The ability to see into the water clearly and identify stream bed structure so as to identify Hot Spots for trout and also to see the fish holding and feeding so you can make the appropriate cast and drift and hopefully catch the fish.
One of the streams I was fishing the other day was a beautiful freestone stream with crystal clear water and i had many times where I could clearly see the trout holding in a current feeding not more that 5 meters from me.
I could make the cast and watch the reaction of the fish as my fly drifted towards it. It was ignored on the first drift and I noticed it was just a little short and not quite in the right current.
I added about 30cm of line and made the cast again.
This time it drifted straight towards the fish and as it got very close; the trout rose from its holding position and sipped the fly from the water surface.
I saw the fish turn and head back towards the bottom before I lifted my rod tip and set the hook.
Another small water I was fishing with Rob last week saw me covering a lovely run where I saw a good fish move in the current. I drifted a dry fly over him a few times but he did not come up for it.
I stopped and then tied on a nymph dropper before recasting.
It only took another 2 casts before i saw the dry fly go under and I lifted into a beautiful and very active brown Trout.
You will find that most of the good brands of Polaroid Sunglass Companies will now do prescription lenses for you.
Give Tonic Polaroid Sunglasses a try.
Well worth the bucks 😉
