Time to Think

It has been a very different Season here in The Valley and pretty much elsewhere this year.
A long dry Summer coming off the back of a cold Winter has seen lower rainfalls and reduced flows in a lot of waters .

The trout have still been about though and there have been some Stonkers caught and lost.

With the Mitta Mitta River below Dartmouth dam flowing at a much higher level for most of the Season; it put a lot of people off fishing it and heading to the smaller Tribs over the majority of the season.
With lower water levels and increased pressure from anglers and water users alike; it saw fish numbers drop and those that remained becoming very skittish.

This is where your skill set really comes into play!

How you approach the water and move along as well as your casting, presentation, drift and line management.

Getting all of these things right consistently mixed with the ability to read the water in as to where to look and focus your attention will make a dramatic difference to your catch rate and even picking up those Stonkers we all drool over when looking at friend’s photos.

Take your time when you are moving towards the water.
Don’t silhouette yourself on the horizon.
If a bit of water has the ability to hold/hide a fish; Fish It!
Keep false casting down to The Minimum!

Keep your line length manageable for the water you are fishing.
Don’t try and fish the whole pool from one location/point.

Take note of your surrounds; The Insect life, where the wind is blowing from, etc.

And the list goes on…….

Every Day is different and Every Water is different.

You have taken the time to get out of the house and onto a nice bit of water.
So take the time to stop and look around!
Think about where you are and what is happening around you.

Everyone has those sections of streams and rivers that they don’t like.
It is usually a bit of the stream that they don’t know how to fish properly.
It seems too difficult and a waste of time; so you give it a few quick casts and move on to waters that you feel more comfortable fishing.

I used to be like that!
Over the year I ended up having to fish Those Bits Of water as the people I was with skipped them to fish the better looking sections and I just couldn’t walk past without at least trying.
Slowly I became more comfortable and began covering these sections more efficiently.
As a result; I started catching fish.
Then catching more and better fish out of these waters.
I like to experiment and play with ideas on different and difficult waters.
Some days I Zilch Out; But other days I score big time.

There is no better feeling than that of a big head shake coming back from a snag and then that snag taking off and peeling line from your reel.

Get out there and play!

Experiment!

Play!

Learn!
