It has finally come around to that time of the year when we can dust off our fly fishing gear and load those fly boxes into the vest that we have been slowly filling over the winter months with either bought or our own tyed flies.
Pack the car and kiss the partner goodbye for the next few days and head off into the Victorian countryside.
The Weather Gods were reasonably kind to us this season with a few days of refreshing rain in the lead up week and then pretty mild weather for the Victorian Trout Season Opening.
I gathered a few of my mates together for my usual Opening Weekend Get Together at “The Lodge”.
We kicked things off by attending The Rise Film festival on the Friday night and then a few muscats and thoughts on the New Season.
Saturday morning saw us up and fed a cooked breakfast before packing lunches and loading the cars.
A short discussion on where we would go and who was with who then on the road we went.
Adam, Rob and I headed out to a little stream that I have been watching all winter while Dave and Ian headed out to another Old Favorite.
With the day being cool and no insect life buzzing about we all opted for the Nymph and 3wt rods.
We covered some pretty good looking water for little result first up and had us slightly dejected before we headed into the treed section.
this is where things picked up.
I missed a smaller trout on a short take in a tight pool before heading further up to where a small streams flows in from the right.
There is a lovely deep pool just before it hits the main stream and I ran a few drifts through before my indicator went down and I lifted into a lovely Brown trout of about half to 3/4 lb.
Adam meanwhile had followed the main stream and also hooked into a nice 1/2lb brownie.
Double hookups to start us off in the 2017 Trout Season.
As I was fighting my fish; Rob had come up behind me and grabbed a few happy snaps.
Perfect timing Rob 🙂
The next few hours saw all of us hooking into some lovely fish.
The occasional tree and tussock also claimed a few nymphs and received some mixed words.
There were a few better Browns landed over the day that had us smiling well into the evening.
Dave and Ian had similar success on their stream with some lovely Browns and also a few Rainbows to hand.
Only a few light spits of rain fell and did nothing to dampen our enjoyment of our day.
I hope that you all managed to get time out from your busy lives to experience a similar start to your Trout Season.
Tight lines and happy Flyfishing.
Cheers; Scottie
